Nothing wrong with beefier undercarriage legs in case the aircraft is to be flown by ex-F16 jockeys with big moustaches and silk scarves who
think they can fly anything after that.

Thanks Mathieu, your post confirmed a couple of stories that I had picked up at some point but couldn’t quite put together. The replica is still a great achievement but it is good to know where the differences are between this and the original aircraft. I know I picked up on the undercarriage differences when building a model of a D.XXI years and years ago….

although Fokker used the original drawings,

Fokker did not had original drawings when they built the replica, they used drawings/sketches supplied by a Finnish museum. For the tube welded fuselage they could use the one left in Denmark as template.

One thing that always struck me was that the undercarriage legs looked somewhat more spindly in period photos. Does anyone know more about this?

As the builders used the drawings/sketches from Finland the Dutch replica has the undercarriage from a Finnish D.XXI, the Finnish legs were thicker and longer than the Dutch used. This because the Finnish needed stonger legs to enable operations with a ski undercarriage.

The new D.XXI will be painted as the 223 to represent the aircraft of the pilot J. van Zuijlen who was shot down and killed in May 1940. Attached an image how that would lool like.

Fokker D.XXI replica (built by Fokker from original drawings) of the National Military Museum in Soesterberg, The Netherlands.

Yep – although many films simply have them painted up with Japanese markings….

…not to be forgotten: The T-6 disguised as “Zero”.

There was at least one made up to look like a Hellcat for a film about Dien Bien Phu.

From the rear quarter, the modified Harvards could pass (with appropriate paint) for Wildcats. They don’t look bad as razorback Thunderbolts.

Thanks for the heads up about that one! Two years ago I saw the Fokker C.X replica that they had built (static only unfortunately) and I saw the engine and prop that was going to be used on the D.XXI. It is amazing to see how far they have come since!

Always had a bit of a soft spot for the D.XXI.
