Bruntingthorpe Cold War jets open day

Fantastic day, well done, and lots of hard work by all involved to pull it off, they were swamped, I think those that didn’t go to Duxford must have turned up as it was heaving and one of the biggest, if not, the biggest crowds they have had, which put a strain on the short crowd line, though one hears it may get extended in future.

Nice to see some aerial activity as well, and though they were let down by weather and technical issues elsewhere, it all ran smoothly and I thought the VC10 model and Vulcan were absolutely stunning, from certain angles they looked real, well all bar the lack of smoke emanating from their back ends.

There were issues they need to address however, one was the total lack of regard for the safety barrier up on the embankment behind the runway, they did attempt later on to move those people, but there was no marshal there to enforce it, indeed I personally saw one person spoken to several times but he kept returning the minute the staff left, he and some child sat directly behind the VC10 when it did its power run, having had a Ten engine explode on me in the RAF and eject the blades out of a detuner high into the sky, they would have been literally shredded, additionally when the BBMF Spit displayed down the runway they were more or less on the end of display line. I couldn’t believe some people were sitting on their with children who must have been around 4 or 5 with no hearing protection when the likes of the Bucc and Victor was doing it’s stuff. Pure stupidity and It is not as if it isn’t printed on the tickets, no one beyond the barriers. The multiple transgressor should have been escorted off site in my view. The simplest way to fix it would be to extend the barrier that runs down the banking to then run along the edge of the bank ( runway side ) to prevent people going up onto it.

But enough of that, fantastic day and fantastic event, keep it up. I have added a couple of Pictures, taken from behind the barriers.

It was the second CWJ day I have been to, but the first where I had been purely up to Bruntingthorpe to watch and not involved with trying to fix something or sort items out for XX741. Tony has good points about the entry from the static line to the runway (people pushing in to get the shot) and the embankment. But of course it is the type of event where some people struggle to show any common sense (perhaps me included as I never put the deffs on once, I’m a professional LAE and always do at work!) Some teams did show up better than others, because those that know the set up there know it is a wide range of different people that own and maintain the runners. One hopes that ZA326 will become an active runner sooner that later, of course the frame needs certain major components to be sourced and that a certain other ripple project may pickup again. Of course there is also the F4, but that is a long way in the future. One of my favourite shots, of the team there that I have the most contact with.. Victor Sim flat packing some TBAGers.

The large model association displays were brilliant as well as Millies low flypasts.

Agreeing with your first post TT, I never miss a CWJ display if I can help it. The sheer sight, sound and smell is unique and very addictive. It’s only when you see these complex beauties close up that you realise the amount of work and dedication that goes into keeping them running, and to cap it all there are some very exotic machines still waiting in the wings to join the ground runners in future.

The no show of the Comet was as expected considering the problems that have dogged it. The Nimrod running at the very beginning was I thought a good sign, but of course safety first meant that a ground run was its lot for the day. But after that it was all good. The Hunter GA.11 was a bonus.

Part of the enjoyment for me personally is seeing them taxi back around behind the crowd after each individual run, as I imagine that sight at RAF / RN airfields up and down GB. My only wish is that this could be achieved with more of the types and not just the Canberra and Victor etc.

But for now – roll on August 28th!

Hi Tony, we started 4 first then 3,2,1. Number 3 is quite a slow starter so we prefer to have another engine going before we start it. Once that snags fixed it’ll be back to 3,4,2,1

Ahh that explains it, it did look a bit reluctant and could probably do with a good Lix wash, did you get the kit off the RAF?

I can remember taking a debrief and having one snagged that engines so and so would not relight at XYZ feet…. looking at him incredulously and pointing out that they were not designed to relight above ABC feet and being a good several K above that I was not surprised, to get the retort, well the others did!!!
Needless to say for peace and quiet we washed them even though they were behaving as they should and were designed too!

One of the reasons I drove down from East Mids was to see it 🙂

Off Pprune Runway

I made the long trip down to Brunty from Moray and have to agree that it was a great weekend. Sadly Nimrod XV226 had a few too many problems that stopped it doing any sort of taxy run. Not including the rudder (which I believe is going to be replaced) I was on board for the pre show ground run on Sunday essentially to check out the stubborn #2 Engine out (from Saturday) , all went fine until it just quit, we found the snag quite quickly once it was shut down, but the brakes were also a bit spongy as well, so Bob T called it a day and we pulled her onto Bay 1. a bit of a shame really as Bob was really keen to do a very gently slow taxy for the crowd. The guys and gals at Brunty are superb and all of them love their aircraft to bits, but I have to admit the Lightning was something else.

Yes certainly a good show which grows each year. I was disappointed that the Nimrod and Comet weren’t able to run this year. The Shackleton being open for inspection was a most welcome addition. However the Hanger which housed the Beech 18 seemed closed this year.
The show has certainly come on from when it first started. The main attraction for attending this event being the ‘up close and personal’ experience you get to these jets tearing down the runway. I suppose as the show increases in popularity and aircraft participation the health and safety and liability rules start to kick in, this being inevitable and a difficult balancing act no doubt for the organisers. However I guess some people don’t want to give up the ‘close and personal experience’ which the open days catered for when it first started. However safety should always prevail and spectators need to listen to the safety marshals. If anyone hasn’t been to this show which is held twice a year I throughly recommend it.

As a side note.

On the VC10 side, I must admit I was surprised to see them start the outers first I.E 4 then 1, In the RAF, I and the rest of us always used to start the inboards first, IE 2 and 3.. the reason being simply from a safety point of view, if you ever get a fire etc in either of those engines during start up, you would not be having to attempt to deal with the problem under a live engine.

It did, but as you see from this long shot it isn’t… sorry about the quality on this one 🙂

Still more to upload if anyone is interested. You can probably tell I was impressed with those radio controlled jets, I am not normally a fan of them, but those two raised the bar.
