Home to the USAF 94th Bomber Group ( Squadrons 331,332,333 and 410th ) with B.17s during WW2 the airfield was holding a Fly-in today. A most enjoyable and friendly event.
A few images below of some of the aircraft taken from the Watch Tower of the preserved Control Tower which is a must for any visitor to the Airfield.

I enjoyed Saturday a lot (apart from the puncture – fixed with the help of ace chaps at Rougham). Great company, good hog roast and perfect grass. I’d have come the next day in the Moth for another helping if there hadn’t been for the crosswind! Great idea to get that alternative strip sorted. Thanks to the N Weald Marshallers and the organisers!

I had one really sad moment when I spotted the Jodel that my friend Keef shared as his final aircraft. He passed away earlier this year, but seeing the aircraft I found myself, just for that instant, thinking I would see him again.
Then another friend wins the 50 gallons of fuel draw. Magic!
That apart, what a great fly-in, well worth the twelve minutes or so I spent flying there. Congratulations to all involved.
Back on Wednesday too. This really is a Rougham week.

I had to laugh when someone on the ground (I think I know who) responded to my position report, and suffixed his response ‘Moggy’. Made me laugh. Best R/T since I flew into Duxford with the call sign “Bacon Butty Two”

What a shame the old cross runway no longer exists.

Funny you mention that Moggy. With the strength of the wind today and such is the size of the huge flat grass parking area for visitors we made a decision.
A couple of pilots were concerned with the crosswind and asked if the y could use the far side of the parking area that had been mown flat. I paced this out and up the the 09/27 runway we have 460 metres of flat grass.
A Jodel used it first and with the wind sock pointing horizontally and exactly down the (runway) he was off in less then 150 metres climbing steeply.
He was followed by a Renegade, then a Cessna 150 (not mine) and finally by the magnificent Percival Vega Gull which was off in less then 300 metres. We are now looking at re opening this area as the new crosswind runway
subject to Rougham Farm Estates approval, so watch this space.
Thanks to all who flew in over the two days, for a first event in nearly ten years it was great success and heartening to see nearly 60 GA types parked in the sunshine. Next year, bigger and better
with overnight camping, BBQ, beer tent and other attractions.

Dot Mathie’s Auster is certainly a lovely specimen….

Good use of the higher vantage point.

A brief update on Sundays activities which were substantially affected by a strong crosswind. A few visitors did however brave the conditions and were most welcome. A couple are shown below.

I had no idea this was on as I would have made the walk across to have a look. Was it advertised, don’t recall seeing it anywhere or in our Free Press.

It was a splendid fly-in.
I arrived amidst a welter of others, despite there being no ATC everyone (almost) sorted themselves out well.
G-JUJU was by far the prettiest aircraft there. I hope they sorted the flat tyre and she was able to get away.
