I am currently restoring 1938 Tiger Moth N5490 http://www.N5490.org and have the RAF Form 78 Movements Card which indicates that it was in store at 20 MU just before being sold off to Whittemores at Croydon. 20 MU was based at RAF Aston Down at the time. However, I am in correspondence with a chap who worked at Whittemore’s in the fifties when the Tigers arrived. 198 were acquired and the all came from 14 MU Carlisle. 130 were flown down and the remainder were brought down by lorry. He is certain than none came from Aston Down.
The theory therefore is that the admin. for these aircraft may have been carried out by 20 MU, but the aircraft could have been located elsewhere.
I’d be interested in hearing from anyone else who has had a similar experience of such dissociation between Form 78’s and actual aircraft movements, particularly with regard to MU’s. Does anyone have any hard data regarding 14 MU Carlisle, particularly with reference to hundreds of Tiger Moths being stored there in the fifties? Any photos?
