Eclipse/BTH hand inertia starter series 6 required for DH Queen Bee restoration

Hi guys,

Not sure if I’m posting this in the right area, apologies if not.

I am searching for a Series 6 hand cranking starter if there is one out there anywhere. The DH Queen Bees were fitted with these. The original unit was manufactured by Eclipse in the States, but BTH had the license to manufacture from 1929. The Queen Bees were fitted with these because it would have been impossible to hand prop them when they were perched on the catapult. My Bee is going back on Short Bros. floats so it would be nice to be able to stand on the starboard float and hand crank the beast while its in the water.

Unimaginable riches will fall on anyone who can unearth one! Please e-mail me at vintageminor-at-gmail.com if you can help with this or any of the radio or relay gear fitted to the Bee. I have the original Queen Bee gyro autopilot unit and rudder and elevator servos, but little else in terms of the autoflight gear.

Excellent – a Bee was long rumoured to be in the USA, but I hadn’t realised how much of it you have!

That is quite the thorough and fascinating history Ian.
Thanks for posting it.

Thanks Stan, I have e-mailed you.

If anyone is interested, here’s the somewhat temporary website for the project:

This aircraft is going back on a set of original Short Bros. floats, so should make quite a splash in the warbird world!

I have an Eclipse-Rotax N3DM which is basically the standard “angle drive’ as fitted to our Auster, Fox Moth and Dragon,( CO 257 or 209 for 12volt and CO225 for 24 volt) but has the external hand cranking adapter on the back of the reduction gear housing allowing manual or electric starting as desired. Would that be of use to you? It is 12 volt C/W rotation and is fully overhauled and certified. PM me if interested
