Hello. Can anyone help me identify this wing section? I’ve had this for years but I’ve never managed to identify the aircraft it comes from. The holes through the surface are 2” in diameter. I don’t think it’s ever been flown and looks to be a spare part.

There are no markings other than those visible in the picture, which are –
Iss 2
45TE-81ND
Serial 28
A triangular stamp = DHB 945
Dimensions are –
Leading Edge to Trailing Edge 28″
Width = 4 1/4″
Height = 17 5/8″
It’s very heavy on the leading edge. I think the round plate, held in by lock wire, must be holding in a lead weight.
Can anyone identify the aircraft where it might have been fitted? Also would the holes be for – navigation lights?
Thanks

I have a picture of a uncovered elevator (from a Mk1 Dove/Devon) that shows the holes. Other pictures of other elevators we have show the holes are covered (I assume by fabric). Sorry, but no time to post the pics at the moment.

Looking at my Dove AP there is no sign of those holes in the Starboard elevator tip, indeed the tip doesn’t appear to be seperate from the rest of the elevator.

You might also find that the ‘lead’ mass balance is ‘GEC Heavy metal’, i.e. depleted uranium. Hope I’m wrong.

Many thanks Dave – that sounds pretty conclusive.
Does anyone know what the holes would be for? For years I’d assumed that the holes were for navigation lights so I had been trying to identify the part on that premise.
Does anyone have a good picture of a DH Dove or Devon tail, I cant seem to find one online.
Thanks

Hi there,
I have this listed as 45TE81A/ND, Dove/Devon/Sea Devon elevator starboard, tip complete with mass balance. Sec/Ref: 26FN/5539
Hope that helps
Regards
Dave

Gut feeling says dh Dove elevator.

If my memory serves me correctly (happy to be corrected though!) –
DHB – inspected, and no doubt made, at de Havillands Broughton plant
Then one step further, it is for a Dove Mk.5 and goes on the Tail empennage (4 – Dove type designation, 5 – type of Dove, TE – Tail Empennage).
So as already mentioned, and without specific details to hand, either a rudder or elevator tip though the shape suggests more likely an elevator.

I think it might be an elevator or possibly rudder tip if there is a weight inside the leading edge nose.
