Can Anyone Help With A Contact At RAF St Athan Crash And Smash Please?

I’m trying to find out more about a recovery following a modern military jet accident back in 2001. It concerns the two F-15s which crashed in the Cairgorms in March 2001. I know someone who was part of the mountain rescue team who was involved at the time and he tells me the wreckage was cleared completely by the Crash Recovery Team from St Athan. It’s thought the F-15s were transported to RAF Lakenheath and may have gone stateside eventually.

I would be very interested in making contact with any of the St Athan team who were involved in the recovery back in 2001 if possible.

Can anyone help?

Due to the location being ecologically sensitive a very detailed clean up took place including potentially polluted ground cover being removed.

As for the air traffic aspect the controller was cleared. He was saddened by the affair and as a former member of RAF air traffic I can understand why. It should never have become a court martial.

Whitley: I don’t know your exact interest in this crash site but I recommend you stay away from it. Both ac crashed into high ground while receiving a radar descent service from RAF Leuchars. Both pilots died and the US families took legal action against the RAF air traffic controller concerned. It all got very messy, the ‘special relationship’ went sour for a while, the wounds have not fully healed and no one will thank you for dragging the subject up again.

St Athan

It may be worth posting in the St Athan thread on http://www.airfieldresearchgroup.org.uk/forum (if you haven’t done so already) as I know there are a number of contributors who have links with the airfield and may be able to help

Regards

Pete

The remains of the two F-15’s were still stored at LKH whilst I was there 2004-2008 but I think they left in 2008.

I doubt they’ll have records of the recovery team. In that timescale, all will have been posted, or left the military.

Fingers crossed you find what you need to though.

I think the unit moved to Boscombe Down.
