Is there any news of the Hawker Tempest mk2 restoration at North Weald? I’ve tried contacting the site but the localcouncil only had the number for a garage or something over the road. I’ve read mixed reports; yes it should reach airworthy status, or no, it has been delayed and is unlikely. I would love to see any mark of Typhoon or Tempest in the air again. One can only dream.
Someone at the BBMF told me the Germans were not happy with the Eurofighter being named the Typhoon! Bad associations I suppose!

A dilemma every warbird owner has Geoff. If I remember correctly Kermit wasn’t sure about the reliability of the Sabre.

Hi All,
Mr Merry,
I think I can recall Kermit a while back saying although the MkV is being restored to airworthy standard he was in two mind s as to fly it or not I suppose it’s the same with any rarer aircraft restoration as whether or not to fly it the same thing was said to me by Fred Panton many years ago when I visited Just Jane on a regular basis through my work. He said it fine getting her airworthy but what if it has an accident then we have lost the aircraft.

Thanks Geoff, I did see the post on Kermit’s FB page. I would love to see either fly. Better still both.

Could it be to do with this one?

I guess we need someone from that end of Europe to explain it. I can see two connections to that name but the real reason might be completely different again.

They were not happy. I was working in MoD on the project in at the time of the name consultations.

I thought it was chosen because all four languages used the same word….
German – Taifun
Italian – Tiffone
Spain – Tifón
British – Typhoon
Although it has to be said that the Germans don’t call it a Taifun – to them it’s a Eurofighter – so there may be something in the assertion.

Yes, it’s the same one, it was transported to Florida a few months ago.

Maybe a daft question but is this the same Tempest V which has been sat with PPS at Booker?

Hi All,
Mr Merry,
Talking of Mr Weeks Tempests this was posted on his Facebook page :- https://www.facebook.com/KermitWeeks
His comments along with the above snap yesterday:- OK, all you British Aviation enthusiasts… where in the world will you ever see this as a front burner project? Please describe for the uninitiated the ramifications of this shot!
His comments posted 3Hr’s ago 😀 :-
Most people got yesterday’s post right: We have pulled our Tempest II over to help in the restoration of our Tempest V.
At this point, it doesn’t make sense not to do BOTH of them side by side as one will help the other with the Tempest II being basically complete!
I gave Andy the choice of either restoring the two Tempests or getting my hang glider flying again.
Guess I’ll have to wait. frown emoticon

I believe they are having to re do some work on the Tempest at North Weald, and have started work on the engine.
Pretty sure Richard Grace has a Tempest project too, ( I’m sure his Dad would have approved ).
