Is it possible for me to access the IWM photo collection/archive? If so, how?

Thanks for at-least taking the time to read my post, not sure if my request is possible and what the process is but maybe some of you have already done so, hence my question.

I am particularly interested in the Gladiator and I am trying to track down detailed images of the cockpit for a 3D modelling project.

I presume the IWM would have some images, maybe factory photos but then I come to the next part of my question…..can I view them, scan them, copy them in anyway (not for sharing just reference) and if so, how do I go about accessing them?

Thanks for any help, cheers, MP

You can also try the Mushroom books on the Gladiator including some very nice 3D images and 3D glasses are included.

Hi
I have been several times.
The photo archive is housed in Austral Street which is just around the corner from the IWM at Lambeth.
You will need to book up in advance of your visit.
Once there you can search through boxes and boxes of images.
Photocopies are available on the day for a reasonable price (I think it is either 10 or 20p per copy).
Proper reproduction images are obviously more.

I went to the Lambeth photo collection 10 years ago.

At the end of it I had to order the images -and pay for them which they sent on a few weeks later.

Very helpful place.

Need to search ‘Gladiator’ here:

http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/search

You might also try visting The National Archives (which holds a good collection of Air Publications) and also try the FAA Museum and Shuttleworth Collection.

RAF Museum would also be worth a contact: all will supply images on request. It won’t all be gratis, but you should get what you need.

Also the Gladiator Pilot’s Notes would be a good start for instrument locations/functions. The PN’s are usually available in reprint via Amazon, eBay etc.
