I cannot help you with much information about this rack but I think it’s a postwar design. I have a wartime copy of AP1664 (Bomb Carriers) and this one isn’t featured. The Stores Ref. (11A/4376) is a lot higher than the racks in the AP and the designation (Type 1, Mk. 2) looks more like something from the late ’40s or early ’50s.

I’d be thinking more of Canberra, Shackleton or Gannet than Mosquito.

Hi, This is I think a bomb rack for small practice bombs.

Doesn’t look to be for practice bombs as such. At the top on Pic 2 there are 5 rounded drum-like objects which appear to be electro-mechanical fuzing units that would not be required for small practice bombs. I think it is more likely to be a carrier for flares eg 4.5″ recce flares or similar but without more pics(and scale) of the other side, one can only surmise.

I think most RAF bomber types could carry it, we found some practice bombs on a Halifax MkIIB we dug so it must have had a simular rack installed. These small practice bombs were filled with lead shot and emitted smoke from the tail. Try a google image search for OTU and other training aircraft.

Do you Know what Aircraft Would Have Used It…

Thanks
