Does anyone have an idea of what the different Hawker font numbers translate to in inches or centimetres?
For example,
“Letters Hawker Size No. 6″ are 1/8” tall
“Letters Hawker Size No. 5″ are 5/32” tall.
But I don’t know what the others are.
Kind regards,
Ron Taylor

It’s very confusing. There must be several types as I’ve found a drawing with Hawker No. 4 (3/16″ high).

I have a jump from 6 point to 10 point, each size listed as condensed No. 1 and condensed No. 2; 6 point being the smallest font size in the “type” range.
10 point No.1 shows .1″ and 10 point No. 2 shows .08″ in height.
There are notes indicating special cut dies required for a deviation from this format, but it sounds as though the standards may have changed over time. I would guess, based on the information you have above, 6 point as called out on your drawing would be close to the 12 point in my list (condensed No. 1 is .14″ and condensed No. 2 is .18″).
There must be another “Type” list floating around out there, the Hawker list I am using was updated in 1960, so there is room for multiple previous versions for which I have no information.

I may have to go that route.
“Hawker Size No. 8″ is .1” high
“Hawker Size No. 10 is .09” high
Keep this up and I might make my own listing.

Nothing showing under No.6, .060″ is pretty small, anything under that makes me wonder if there is a second scale of font size used. Do You have a sample part, or are you able to get hold of one?

Yes, that does help Ian. Thank you.
Any idea about Hawker size No. 4?

Ron,
Hawker “type” called out on drawings follows point sizes in Spartan No. 1 or No. 2 format (not sure of the difference off hand). No. 6 size is listed as Spartan condensed No. 1 and follows the following dimensions:
Height: .06″
Space width: .07″
Width of letter “I” and stops: .03″
I have no reference to a No. 5 “type” size.
There is a note showing if the text is condensed, it must be called out on the drawing.
An alternative “type” is listed as “Sans Serif”
Standard labels are listed as being produced on 20 swg aluminum, 5/16″ wide strips for single rows, and 9/16″ wide for double row text.
I hope this helps!
