Raf marked box

Just purchased a ‘classic’ bit tatty-tired-wormy-rotten blue/grey wooden storage box, single latch for, padlock? heavily reinforced with black painted, metal corners, etc…. stamped= ‘AcrownM’ 1938. also ‘B&P’…….Could that be possibly Boulton & Paul?

Some added lettering to top in white ‘paint’, ‘O/C No/ 614 (AC) SQUADRON CARDIFF AIRPORT’………Could this possibly be 614 Squadron, who formed a year earlier, and could (AC) stand for ‘Army Cooperation??

On the 3rd March 1944 462 Sq became 614 Sq in order to free up 462 for an Australian unit in the UK. It continued to operate Merlin-engined Halifaxes, with a large contingent of Australian crews, and became the target marking force for 205 group. They carried out their last operation on 3rd March 1945.

Pre war, Cardiff airport was Pengam Moors. It moved to Rhoose, a satellite of St Athan, after the war. A Halifax hung around there into the fifties. Now, inevitabley, housing estates and superstores.

I did wonder whether that was Officer Commanding…..seemed too good to be true!
I believe 614 were re formed, or at least another Squadron became 614? and they used Halifax and Liberators in Italy mainly for target marking??……..nothing to do with box but I happened to find, many years ago, some AcrownM Target photos from the Italian campaign, showing nottalot! lots of fields and smoke and those long exposure lights from flares, etc…one of the Brenner Pass……..lots of snow!

Here you go, looks good

Originally formed at Pengham Moors, near Cardiff on 01/06/37 as the only Welsh Auxiliary Squadron, 614 operated Hawker Hinds, Hectors and Westland Lysander II’s and III’s as an Army Co-operational unit. Re-equipped with Blenheim IV’s in July 1941 as a Light Bomber Squadron. Converted to Blenheim V’s at Odiham in August 1942 and posted to Blida, Algeria in November 1942 for operations in North Africa and Italy to finally disband at Bo Rizzo, Italy on 25/01/44.

Yes, I did consider Air Cadets and hoped it wasn’t!……….I read in reference book that 614 were at Cardiff and they were, originally an Army Cooperation Squadron?
