Mmmmm… Google ?, what an interesting concept. I wonder if it’ll catch on ?

I am surprised. It wasn’t A conspiracy theory, I was going by what food concessions were charged at the
Essex shows ten years ago. Many paying £1000 or more for the weekend for a small food wagon.

You’re such a spoiler Mike J, you’ve just ruined people’s conspiracy theories there, you really shouldn’t let truth get in the way of a good whinge……

It would be interesting to know how much a typical trade stand costs. Unless it’s another Duxford Secret.
I would guess £2,000+ for the weekend. Although that may be a huge under estimate ?

No conspiracy, no secret. It took me about 30 seconds to pull this up using Google – you should try it sometime!

FYI the cost of hiring a trade stall space at Duxford has also gone up this year.

Also, are there any unmissable, once in a lifetime displays due this year ?

I’d also add that at the 02, or at any other venue, you don’t get to visit any kind of music museum either. But whilst you wait for the acts to begin, you can ‘enjoy’ endless ads in the arena for Coca-Cola and all the other usual suspects….

I know you cannot compare apples with oranges, but I recently saw The Corrs at the 02 with a cost of £46.50, considerably more than the cost of ‘Legends’ (£31.05). As a sort of comparison, including the support band, there were 10 to 12 performers, considerably less that the number of pilots at Duxford. Of course, at both events there are considerable number of other essential staff to pay for.

Also, at Duxford we are entertained for much longer. And if you choose to see a bigger act, you can easily double that cost. But Duxford is the Springsteen of vintage air shows 🙂

Agent K, please note the most important word in my original post was ‘cynical’. At Duxford over the last few years I’ve felt like a sausage being processed, like I do when dealing with a lot of institutions these days.

It is clear from the IWM Duxford statement in post #11 that the organisers, and the authorities, are trying to reduce possible traffic congestion for airshow safety and for the sake of other road users; charging a modest amount for car parking is surely one reasonable option for doing that, especially if public-transport and park-and-ride arrangements are in place. It may also encourage car-pooling. I’ve often met my brother at Duxford for events but unfortunately we live in completely opposite directions; maybe it is something we’ll have to look into.

A world class event with newly intoduced E-ticketing that has resulted in prices that are either close to or less than last year and people are quibbling over a a minor parking fee?
Where else could you get two days entertainment for such a cost?

Guy

Good point but i suspect people feel there is a move to push people out of their cars.
If public transport became my only means of transport from SE England to Duxford then i would bid a fond farewell to the shows there.

It’s the old British Railways trick of raising prices to suppress demand – demand plummets, you can close it down. The Duxford site probably runs at a loss, the IWM would likely love to sell this prime ‘brownfield’ site and pocket the money.
O.K., cynical I know, but I think we’re being manipulated into becoming fixed revenue streams.

I find that with all the “experts” on this forum you really should apply to take over and run Duxford, you all seem so experienced at running sustainable businesses……

Actually such comments are just plain rude and offensive to all who work hard at and for Duxford for the masses to enjoy.

Duxford does NOT run at a loss, FACT, if it did it couldn’t continue and would be closed, FACT, the IWM does NOT want to sell this site FACT and has a 5 year business plan to be able to sustain and develop Duxford. IWM will experience a 50% + decrease in income from central government funding in the 2010 -20 period and thus has to make good this amount. Through management of entrance fees, airshow fees and such then the income gap will be mitigated.

Give some credit to the management and volunteers who work hard at Duxford, they don’t come into work every day with a sly grin on their face working how they can close it down, they are just as enthusiastic and passionate as the visiting enthusiast. 😡

I have been involved with Duxford for a long time now and it amazes me when visitors come to airshows and complain about how much it has cost them to get in,but then swan off and buy a framed print or a a large die cast model or a few costly books at the stalls, without batting an eyelid. Does this mean they’ll still complain, but stop spending money at the stalls or what? There is a limit to everyone’s budget, and a lot of airshow visitors are already picking which show out of the 3 held annually at DX to go to. This trend started a few years back and shows no sign of changing, increased cost equals less footfall eventually.

Five quid extra for parking??? SHOCK HORROR!! Try the cost of parking your bum on an aeroplane for 23 hours to come from the other side of the World. Remember all these aircraft cost a mint to operate so costs must be covered. The things don’t come for free. so that you can enjoy the sight and sound. Get A GRIP you whineing lot

I’d like to visit Chino…..maybe one day! 🙂

There must be a reason that it’s cheaper; is the attendance far greater, the insurance cheaper, the operators in less need of financial support or something else? Maybe they make more on the burgers?
