Help with Leigh Light please

I have been asked to make a mock up Leigh Light using a lens which is said to be from a Wellington. However this lens is 7″ x 4″ and seems suspiciously small. Is it correct or could it be from a camera?
I would appreciate your knowledge and advice and any info on technical drawings or specs.

Ivor, that would be fantastic. I am doing this at the Cornwall at War Museum. www.cornwallatwarmuseum.co.uk

We’ve got several Leigh light front covers like the RAF museum one in the museum store. They aren’t in the best of condition – I think they have been used in a garden at some time, but they are complete. I can measure one for you if you wish.

Since we have several I might be able to de-accession one. What is your mock up going to be used for?

Intending to make the model to scale to contain the original lens that has been given to me to work with. However I am convinced the lens is actually from a Leigh Light.

Hi Annek

Here’s a page from the FN25 AP that may help, plus an actual measurement from the RAFMs Leight light – I didn’t hop over the barrier – it is a member of staff doing the measuring while I took the pics. You should be able to scale something reasonable. The end of the tape says 120 inches.

Not really sure where you stand right now with your task, hopefully others will add better stuff.

oops I’ve just realised that you might not be making your model to scale!

Thanks James. I’m in Cornwall. I’ve tried Hendon and National Archives for AM drawings with no luck.

Hi

You could always take the lens to the RAF museum at Hendon and hold it up against their Leigh Light. If you are physically too far away for that then you might ask the people in the research section if they could measure the lens for you. Failing that they may have the drawings you are looking for.

There may well be an A.P. for the light and perhaps that might help – again Hendon would probably be the most likely people to have a copy.

I’ve modified my FN25 Turret 3D Model to show roughly the light as might appear and a second with your light – the model is to scale. Looks like you will need a much bigger light! My model uses a light that is 2 feet across.
