I’ve just seen the monthly e-mail from the RAFM and they are asking for ideas/views etc on how to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the RAF. They already have some plans of course but the contact (brave lady) is helen.nichols@rafmuseum.org. So all you chaps/chapesses who complain about the current setup….here’s your chance!

If I remember correctly (It was a long time a go) The upstairs galleries started with balloon and kites (No.1 squadron RFC) and ended with a display of gallantry medals and citations from WW2 Perhaps they might get some ideas if they look up there. Yes, they will need lights and a good cobweb broom I expect…

An exhibition to mark all the humanitarian work completed, clearly there would be search and rescue but also there have been airdrops of food and supplies across the world. There can be a perception that the armed forces are just there to wage war and it would be good to redress the balance. Many hours of voluntary work has also been carried out with buildings renovated and at a local level communities aided.
To encourage development and foster adventure the RAF have many activity clubs covering areas such as climbing, sub aqua, canoe, sailing etc. These clubs mount expeditions which explore and delve into areas which are not well known. Sharing some of these with the public would show another aspect.

How about getting a few chunks of Stirling out of storage and putting them together for a display near the Hali and Lanc for a limited period? Among other good reasons for doing so I bet over the years there must of been hundreds of ex crew members who visited the museum but never got to see anything of the aircraft that they went to war in.
And despite the superb efforts of The Stirling Project and Hindenburg I doubt we will be seeing a complete example for a very long time to come!

I would like to see a display in the gallery consisting of a model (1/48 scale at least) of every aircraft type ever operated by the RAF.
