Steve Canyon on DVD

Steve Canyon was a long-running (1947-88) comic strip about a roving USAF trouble shooter and was the basis for a television series of the same name that ran for one year (1958-59) on NBC. Rarely seen after a brief run on ABC in 1960, it’s now available on DVD thanks to the efforts of one man, John Ellis, often against great odds. Details here:

Good news. I have the first 2 series and had just about given up on seeing series 3 becoming available. Love the hokey adverts too.

Some episodes are very aircraft-centric (with F-102s, B-52s, C-47s, H-19, etc.), others delve more into personal and non-flying adventure stories. It’s aimed at adults rather than kids.

Yes, it’s hopelessly corny and pro-Air Force by today’s cynical standards, but it reflects the era. The acting isn’t bad (certainly no worse than most efforts of the period) and you’ll see some well known actors as guest stars.
The DVD transfer is very well done and they come with a second soundtrack by the Mr. Ellis, and various producers, writers, actors and directors as well as James Farmer, an aviation film historian.
Excellent value for money.
If you’re a fan of Whirlybirds or Sky King, you’ll enjoy them.
