582 Sqd, W/O A.P.Baines, 1334065

Does anyone have any information about 582 Squadron, and 1334065 W/O Baines (my uncle) in particular.

His Lancaster III (I assume) was shot down in Southern Germany on 29th July 1944. What I would like to know is:

1. The code letter for the aircraft? I think that 582 squadron had G0 (Gee Zero) as the squadron code).
2. What the target was on the raid that he was shot down?
3. Is it possible to tell where in the aircraft he would have been? He is listed as an Air Gunner, but I don’t know which turret he might have manned.

If anyone has any photos of the squadron, his aircraft or the crew then that would also be appreciated.

Thanks, Tim

The squadron ORB lists W/O Baines as mid-upper gunner of ND810.

Lancaster III ND810 60-R crashed at 01:50 to the south of Heimerdingen, 21km east-south-east of Pforzheim on an operation to Stuttgart. Take-off was 22:30 from Little Staughton.

W/O A.P.Baines was possibly the mid-upper gunner?

The above information is from ‘Bomber Command Losses 1944’ by W.R.Chorley.

The operation to Stuttgart on the night of 28/29 July 1944 was by 494 Lancasters. German fighters intercepted the bomber-stream over France on the outward flight; 39 Lancasters were shot-down in the bright moonlight (nearly 8% of the force).

The above information is from ‘The Bomber Command War Diaries’ by Martin Middlebrook and Chris Everett.
