Many thanks for taking the trouble and sharing, stirred many memories of those early SBAC shows, mostly good, but my first airshow ever was 1952, with one obvious bad memory.
Comparing those pics showing more aircraft in one formation than we would see in total with many of today’s shows, airshows have certainly changed over the years.

Hi Adrian,
Yes, it does look like XG447. I saw the red trim and immediately thought of the 173.

Excellent photos. Any more of the Bristol 173 (Belvedere)
Looks like Bristol 192 prototype, XG447 to me, Alex.

The Air Race photos could be one of the practice runs as the winning time was 40 mins 44 seconds. The board show 41 min 14 seconds
Interestingly the 74sqn Hunter is the one hanging up at Cosford

[QUOTE=SimonR;2269605]In terms of a definitive date – if the pics of the Vulcan prototype VX770 are from the same set as the first post, and the Rotordyne means they can’t be pre 1958 then the photos must date from summer 1958 because VX770 crashed on September 20th 1958.
I absolutely love this pic:
Which is exactly what it was doing when it broke up at Syerston!

The Vautour certainly looks to be at Biggin Hill.

57/58 were my 2 favourite years at Farnborough, the 22 Hunters were spectacular, the Vulcan climbing vertically and rolling off the top and the P1B warming a young boy’s heart, btw it was the Accountant, what an ugly Aircraft!!!!

I think that the mass formation of Hunters is that of ‘Treble One’ coming out of the 22-aircraft loop at the 1958 Farnborough Show; the Chivenor Hunter F Mk.4 is XF976 (RS):15 (July 1957 – June 1961); and the nine-ship is ‘Treble One’ again, possibly at Chivenor’s ROC Day on 5 October 1959. I don’t know how that fits in with the time-scale but is just my best-guess?

I thought the RAF entry in the 59 race used Biggin….and see http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/military-obituaries/air-force-obituaries/6932787/Air-Vice-Marshal-Charles-Maughan.html That’s the Biggin valley behind the guy jumping out of the Sycamore, surely.
Might be a mix of locations, especially with the Vautours
