Graviner Fire Extinguishers

Hi everyone.

Been doing a bit of head scratching on these fire extinguishers. I am trying to find a A27N/106 mounting bracket to fit on the front left floorboard of my Auster T7. I have been doing some searching on line and it appears this is quite a common post war bracket and an old ‘Key’ thread mentions they might have been used in a Gannet.

I am trying to keep my rebuild as authentic as possible and try and locate one, in fact I don’t even have a pic of that specific mount. So even if someone has a photo so I can see what it is I am looking for. I talked to Dave Baker (Auster Spares) and he only has a later A27N/149 and recommends I find the correct one after all I have done so far for authenticity.

It seems in general that a lot of aircraft restorations/rebuilds either don’t have one fitted at all, or have a modern equivalent.

Any help or suggestions??? Then I guess the next question is are all the actual bottles the same??

Sorry Mods if this is in the wrong place

Cheers
Anthony

Hi Tony, thanks mate! Oh no I cant believe I missed that one on ebay, that is a -106 that I am looking for. The others are -105’s and 8’s. I will hold out for a -106 as I have gone to so much effort to get everything accurate I will just keep looking. Thanks for the links, I will just have to be more vigilant on ebay next time!

Here is where I am at with my rebuild and so I would like a nice tidy mount if possible, not one that needs panelbeating….I know I am being picky aren’t I!

Thanks again Tony, really appreciate it mate!

Hi Guys

Very sorry for the late reply. I appreciate all the feedback and comments. I am really having no joy with this A27N/106 mounting. On another thread here they were used in Vampires and Gannets (I think).

Powerandpassion, I like your post, looks like the one used on the firewall of Mosquitoes as well.

Flame switches also have me scratching my head. Were they all pretty much the same in the 50’s??

Thanks guys and sorry for all the questions. But I really need to find one of these mounts so I can finish off my front floorboards

Cheers and thanks again

Hi Chaps

I can’t help with the question but I can certainly use the dimensions of the extinguisher holder for my Stirling Model! Thanks P&P

Fire in the hole

Anthony,
Don’t know if this is a A27N/106 mounting bracket but here are some pics of an old school Graviner automatic fire extinguishing system :

Bottle contains methyl bromide which is still used today to fumigate shipping containers. It is basically a very heavy gas that displaces air and ‘suffocates’ fire. The bottle in the photo is actually still full so quite an uncomfortable thing to handle with it’s 70 year old seals. Below is a empty bracket, WW2 vintage.

The other elements of the system are the flame switch normally situated on the firewall, and an impact or gravity switch which is the analogue equivalent of the modern day impact switch triggering the airbag in your car.

There are earlier brackets for 1930’s type handheld extinguishers, which were sometimes activated by a cable pull system.
