1940 R.A.F. Education Officer

I am hoping someone can identify this Education Officer, probably named Butler.

On his sleeve his rank is that of a F/L which fits in with the Grade III Education Officer description .

On his collar VR – Volunteer Reserve and as Alex has illustrated above the badge of the Education Branch , two crossed flaming torches with a RAF eagle above and made of gilded metal . The badge was promulgated in 1940 by AMWO A 116 and was abolished on the 29 April 1948 . My reference is “Badges And Uniforms Of The Royal Air Force” , Hobart , Pen & Sword , 2000 . The book does say that the education badge should be above the VR and not below as shown in the illustration .

Best I can do !

Thanks to Alex Bateman for supplying collar insignia. Alex is also the one who twigged his name was Butler.

Thank you David. What rank is he? What are his collar insignia? Do you know what squadron he was with?

In the Air Force List of October 1940 there is a Grade III Education Officer Frederick Butler BSc with Grade III being equivalent to S/L through to F/O on an incremental scale .

He appears to be the only Butler on the list ?
