CASA 2.111B- B.21-103…

hi,
picked up half a dozen old Flypasts in a second hand shop, great reading in May 1995 it mentions that OFMC had acquired the above a/c and aimed to get it to Duxford by early summer. It flew during the filming of B of B and states it is a true bomber not a transport so comes with upper and lower fuselage gun cupolas, did it arrive? or was it the one given away a couple of years ago from Duxford.

regards,
jack…

Sorry if this is thread drift but great video of the FGR2 – never knew anything about that one. Hopefully the whole Black Mike thing will get resolved & a taxiable F4 will be back on the cards. If not, isn’t XT597 available from Everetts?

Love to see the Casa back in one piece – any chance of retro fitting Jumos? I know they were never fitted to a Casa. Seems to be happening a lot with Buchons

To my understanding the FGR2 had to be sold after Mark died, the plans to Taxy her obviously came to naught

That I’m not so sure of…https://youtu.be/0on20KLGk4I

funny though that she was the only private operational F4 in the UK (albeit missing some boxes and bits) and possibly would still be if fate had not intervened.

I did always wonder though how they managed to buy a running F4 at a time that the RAF could not scrap them quick enough due to treaty obligations?

I can only think it was The Hanna Factor – Mark had served as a Phantom pilot which might have helped, and the OFMC was a considerable force at the time. I would love to know more about its acquisition, I read at the weekend she was flown directly into Duxford on retirement in November 1992.

It’s very sad to me – even as someone who’s never even seen a Phantom in the flesh! – that there’s not a taxiable example anywhere in the UK.

Back to the 2.111! Sorry, OP!

The chances of the IWM procuring a genuine Heinkel HE 111 arer pretty slim, the 111 was the mainstay of the German bomber force over Britain during WW2. For me the CASA is a close enough likeness to fill the void at Duxford. Many a young lad (and older ones ) has watched the Battle of Britain movie and for some this has probably sparked an interest in that era of this countries history, I for one would love to see the plane restored to the colours/markings it wore in the movie………….Martin

Agree with the above! An iconic aircraft of my youth would dearly love to see one,

Is there any danger of it being restored soon? Whether in Spanish markings or (my preferred) German markings.
Mind you it’d take an age to move the stored airframes around…I’m sure many would be happy to help though

Last photo I took of it was in March – jammed between the Shackleton and the Pucara in H5…

So the former OFMC machine is not the same one now owned by FHC/Paul Allen, which recently left Duxford?

Also, would the IWM have obtained the ex-OFMC machine around the same time as the Phantom FGR.2 XV474? If so, was it a sale or a donation? Just curious as I’ve recently been looking at that Phantom’s history and the OFMC>IWM transfer seems murky in my own, very limited, research.

To my understanding the FGR2 had to be sold after Mark died, the plans to Taxy her obviously came to naught and the OFMC had no need for her and the IWM saw an opportunity to acquire her at a knock down price, funny though that she was the only private operational F4 in the UK (albeit missing some boxes and bits) and possibly would still be if fate had not intervened.

The former OFMC machine was airlifted in by a German CH-53 . It was sold to the IWM .

The Paul Allen machine is the former Southend Air Museum / Paul Raymond / Aces High machine.

I believe Paul Allen also has the former La Ferte Alais machine.

The disposal of the Amiot AAC.1 and Morane Saulnier MS.500 were explained by the document at the time. I don’t recall a document that outlined the IWM having a policy of only German built Luftwaffe machines.

As for the CASA -I would love to see her restored to an authentic Spanish Air Force scheme. They seem to be able to do it in Germany – quite how it could be justified in the IWM in ‘Battle of Britain’ film markings is beyond me

It is still lurking, unrestored, in the back of a hangar at Duxford. It is now owned by the IWM, although how it fits in with their stated policy of only having genuine German-built wartime Luftwaffe aircraft in the collection has never quite been explained,
