P3700 Hawker Hurricane Crash Site Revisted Sept 2015 – Propeller Hub

I caught a part of South Today they mention a dig on a Hawker Hurricane that crashed on 9th Sept 1940

This was Hawker Hurricane P3700 of 303 Sqn ‘RF-E’ which crashed Saddlescombe Farm, Newtimber, near Poynings, Sussex

The pilot was Flight/Sgt Kazimierz Wünsche P-2096/793443 and he bailed out

All well and good

However, according to BoBtN and the web site above, the propeller hub was originally recovered in Sept 1973 by Wealdon Aviation Archaelogy Group and I believe a photo of it is in BoBtN

So I was quite amazed to see another propeller hub was recovered yesterday, is this a one of rare double engine Hurricane?

Or was the 1973 report incorrect or another aircraft ?

Just to clarify:

The report about the recovery of engine, prop hub etc. in Battle of Britain Then & Now was completely incorrect.

When approached by the MOD ‘Operation Nightingale’ Project for ideas for a BoB 75th anniversary aircraft recovery project, to be conducted along formal archaeological lines, I suggested this site in the full knowledge that a propeller hub and other small parts were extant at site and had not been recovered. This ticked several boxes for the project team: pilot survived, team would not be faced with masses of wreckage and a Polish aircraft. Additionally, I had contact with the family of Sgt Wunsche, the Polish Embassy were engaged and on board and the HAC Hurricane had been re-painted for this season exactly in the markings of this aircraft.

The recovered items will be placed on permanent display at RAF Northolt from where the aircraft took off on 9 September 1940.

I’d also add that a piston with clock mounted in the end of con-rod and purported to be from this aircraft to be found on the internet….most certainly isn’t!!

Hope that clears up the various questions.

This also might add a little interest:

Hub total different (well according to ‘picture’ in BoBtaN )

And BoBtaN says ‘Hub recovered’

So looks like BoBtaN picture is mixed up with another Hurricane recovery

Can anyone on did this week confirmed that it had been ‘dug before’ – I would image the ground physics would show this

was the hub recovered and kept ? or recovered and put back ?. not everything was taken away, most digs now are scratching around on previous dig sites looking for missed or left behind items

Patently, you are safe to assume that.

I guess it was the 1970’s afterall and a lot digging activity was going on and maybe photos and information got mixed up?
