1943. Colorado. Broom factory worker, Mary Babnik Brown, cuts off all her 34 inches of hair and sends it to a USA federal agency program after seeing an ad (to be used for some weather instrument) . Her hair had not been treated with chemicals or hot irons, as required. In 1987 she learned that her hair instead had been secretly used as crosshairs in the new Norden bombsights of USA World War II bombers. President Ronald Reagan sent her a special letter on her 80th birthday, thanking her as a great American who helped win the war.
