I wonder if anyone here went to the Stow Maries Fly-in this weekend ?
I’d be interested to know how many aircraft went. They were told it was going to Clash with Sywell
but went ahead anyway. I would have gone today, but read that it was pre bought ticket only.
It’s a shame as I’d liked to have gone.

Very, Linc. It’s a very small developing restoration project – unique because it is the only WW1 airfield being restored to as it would have been in 1916/18. If WW1 is your bag you should make a visit. They are dong a wonderful job.
Thanks for the link Chas, I would visit, but unfortunately, Hospital calls again this month, and looking at the calendar of Stowmaries, by the time I am fit to go out, everything there will have ended for this year….Bummer…….:apologetic:

Might there be local licensing/planning regulations which impose limitations on spectators and commercial interests on the site?
I think the only restrictions are on the type of aircraft that they like to land there, and the type of flying displays they
can put on.

Sounds a lot different to the Victory Airshow yesterday, it was heaving with folks there, so much so, I had a job to find a space to sit on the grass for a breather. It was packed. It would be interesting to know just how many attended.

“Buy on line to avoid disappointment” isn’t the same thing as “advance tickets only”
Here is one of the flyers: http://www.dancinggiraffe.com/stow-maries-great-war-aerodrome-fly-in-5th-6th-september-2015/
It could just be the way I interpreted it, but how else do you impose a limit of 500 ?
As I said, I am not trying to be critical of the Stow Maries, I wouldn’t do that to anywhere run mostly be volunteers.
They are maybe becoming a victim of their own success ? For example, (and I don’t know if they did it at the weekend or not)
but when they are expecting a big crowd, they should allow food concessions on site.

Are you sure it was advance ticket only? I have been to a number of events at Stow and been able to pay on the gate at all of them, without exception.

Well worth a visit if you haven’t already been and now beginning to take on the feel of an “Old Warden” of the east!
We haven’t been since last year’s remembrance day event. There were a lot more people there than usual, and we’d had a
lot of rain. Which made for a muddy car park.
I of course realise that their main priority is getting the various buildings sorted out, and that a lot of the work is being done
on a voluntary basis. They must get something done about the parking, and the access road across the farm though.
As well as various parts of the site not draining well, after heavy rain.
All in good time I suppose ?

I found out this morning that the fly in was taking place and had I not already got other commitments I would have driven there but I would have been pretty upset to find out it was pre bought ticket only even if it is only about 20 to 30 mins away from home.
I appreciate that they probably want to limit the crowd size due to comparative lack of space but if it is pre bought ticket only then making this clear in all publicity including listings in avaition magazines could save a lot of ill feeling on the gate.

As I said I did not know it was on but would have jumped in one of the classics and gone if not a prebook. I think you can loose lots of visitors on a day like this but also you get monies in if its metted off
We flew in at around 14-00 hours without PPR. Calling up safetycom from 15 miles out we were made most welcome and from what I could see it was a pretty good attendance. Fabulous to watch the Albatross being pre flighted then swung into life, what a sound! A lovely display in nigh on perfect conditions with superb passes showing both top and lower sides. Hard to imagine a squadron of these taking to the air, the noise and spectacle would have been something! Nice to see the BE2 and Sopwith Snipe in the line up, Stow Maries really is making great strides with the renovation of the buildings and general making good. Flying back to Suffolk later was in the best visibility I have flown in this year. Joining overhead home base at Rougham you could clearly see the city of London skyscrapers in the distance. Well worth a visit if you haven’t already been and now beginning to take on the feel of an “Old Warden” of the east!

The good weather must have brought people out. I hope it went well.
I’m not sure if pre booking only is a good idea, it must put a lot of people off.

Hi Alan, I am not far from Stow Maries, I did not see much activity as its about 5 miles away but plenty on the scanner calling Southend then Stow Maries, I did not know it was on or I would of toodled over.
