One of those threads which have covered so much ground since the OP you have actually forgotten what it was….

How about getting back on topic?

I think perhaps this thread has run its course and there is little more to be said on the matter.

Look at commercial aviation!

Even a burnt instrument light bulb sometimes his major news!
(although there was a tragic accident because of one).

Instead of being grateful for how safe everything is, everyone complains it is not safe and sanitary enough!

Well I agree but unless you or sabrejet have anything to add the actual topic has run its course until the Sun does it again that is.

In the big scheme of things it is not that important, after all. We all come here to read and sometimes to learn and to exchange information, knowledge and opinion..

If we are frustrated by the difficulty of comprehension of some posts then we are free not to read them and to move on. If we are frequently frustrated we can always find another forum.

This one’s the best I know but it’s entirely my choice.

Perfect and succinct summation agree entirely.

Agreed. However I think it’s worthwhile trying to maintain standards. In general, like you, I also tend to ignore poorly-written posts on any forum. Since the primary purpose of a forum is the transmission of information, it’s implicit that bad English and incorrect use of grammar can only hinder that process.

Going one step further and using the Media’s coverage of recent events as an example (this thread tackling that very issue by the way), I associate poor grammar and spelling with dodgy or worthless information.

I find this post a little arrogant too but in the spirit of this may I correct YOU? The primary point of a forum is the EXCHANGE of ideas not the TRANSMISSION of ideas.

No need for it is there?

If it’s understandable and doesn’t give you a headache reading it then I see no problem. Some people, myself included, slip up for a whole host of reasons. Only one of which is laziness.

Your comment about poor grammar diluting the value of testimony is not a good argument. Imagine if a historian took that approach. The correct approach is to weigh up its value after examining all the factors.

Jack just ignore these arrogant, self appointed people. I value your posts and have absolutely no problem understanding them. The debate is not about you but about them.
Please keep on posting.

It has always been my policy not to pass personal comments about fellow forumites. However, there are a small number of forumites who post across many threads with contributions clearly intended to be controversial and inflammatory. Sometimes this meddeling is highly inappropriate and results in threads being locked.

Today I am making an exception as I find Sabrejet’s comment so arrogant. Self appointed judge, jury and executioner, protector of the English language. I for one do not appreciate your posts in relation to this matter and it adds nothing to the subject matter of the thread but you just have to fulfil the need to post something.

Nobody disputes the need for correct English in technical documents, the media and books etc. but it is totally unnecessary here PROVIDED the meaning is clear, if it isn’t just move on it’s no loss to you or the poster..

You may associate bad English with unreliable information in the media but that does not translate to here. I value contributions made on here from almost everybody and make my own decisions about its worth. There are very many posts that are well written but contain incorrect information usually because the poster hasn’t checked his “facts” before posting, this is far worse.

I am sure that we have forumites on here who have all different levels of education and competence in English and they should be able to contribute without fear of being ridiculed.

IMHO we do not need self appointed police on the forum, the mods do an excellent job and do not need your help. If you feel strongly about a post expressed badly then report it to the mods for them to take action.

I was going to make a sarcastic comment about the grammar and literacy police on this thread who seem to think that unless a post is written in English to a standard to which they approve it is worthless. So I will. Bollix!

With apologies for continuing the thread drift but I agree, Merlin. But I also agree with Paul and do not accept the need to poke fun at those whose posts are grammatically sloppy. Lack of capital letters and punctuation simply makes reading and comprehension difficult, so I usually don’t bother to read them.

ive only just caught up again with this thread and am surprised at the trouble Ive started my post 23 was intended to help by passing information on to other forum members to save them wasting time if by misplacing a apostrophe or spelling a word incorrectly my message was misunderstood and I caused time to be wasted then im sorry
since retiring ive got to being more involved with various forums and have come more to be conscious of the beauty and intricacies of our language but we all go on learning till we come to the end of our string so when I post again if I offend by my grammar please don’t waste your time reading my post those who forgive my inadequate grammar because of its interest or value of content thank you for reading

ps just so theres no misunderstanding this post as no punctuation intentionally (to wind up the police!)
