Another DB-engined Buchon airborne

It is reported on Facebook that Charlie Brown made the initial flight of Jerry Yagen’s re-engined Buchon (now fitted with a DB to represent a Bf 109G) at Meier Motors this morning.

Warbirds News has some coverage including a snippet on the other cool conversion for Yagen, the Fiat G.59>G.55: http://www.warbirdsnews.com/warbirds-news/gagens-messerschmitt-bf-109-airborne-again.html

Great news and a welcome addition to the US scene. Virginia Beach really seems THE place to go!

As for Buchon or original Bf-109 they are both a significant part of aviation history.
And the more that fly , regardless of RR/daimler powered IMO is irrelevant..

True on both counts. However, being truthful about what one has, and more importantly, doesn’t have isn’t irrelevant.

Congratulations to Jerry Yagen and the MeierMotors team, BTW, for getting another DB605 engined Buchon/Bf109 airborne. I love the sound of the DB engines!:applause:

Anyone know if there is a Junkers Jumo running anywhere?

The last Jumo engine running that I am aware of is in the former Champlin FW190D13. Video below from 1990, from about 5:20 onwards.

There is an excellent page on FB called ‘BF-109 Projects and Restorations’ run by a man called Mickael Rabilloud who is restoring an ‘F’ (Wn10256) to fly. Amazingly, he has found quite a few new o/s parts for it!
He’s a busy man – he’s also restoring a P-40 and has a seperate page for that

Only 25 of the 200-odd produced had German fuselages, I’m not even sure if any of the German fuselages made it to the Merlin-engined version (M1L)

But I bet that when any Buchon comes up for sale there will be statements that the very example in front of us is one of the elusive 25, flown by at least six German aces on a goodwill tour of Spain at the height of WWII…

I wonder if the restoration of Jerry Yagen’s Bf-109E “Black 9” (Wk.Nr. 2023) is still proceeding? Or how close the Hangar 10 Bf-109E (Wk.Nr.1983) is to being completed?

Besides Yagen’s Bf-109G-2 (Buchon conversion) at MeierMotors, they also have the Bf-109G-12 (Buchon conversion) project for Hangar 10, the Bf-109G-6 for Hangar 10, and the Bf-109E-1 project for Robs Lamplaugh. Midwest Aero Restorations is in the early stages of restoring the Lake Swiblo Bf-109G-6 to airworthy, for Texas-based Bruce Winter (owner of the P-51D “Happy Jack’s Go Buggy”). And I recall reading an article within the last year that mentioned that the restoration of Rare Aero’s Bf-109E (Wk.Nr. 4304 – G-CDTI) was beginning. Still no news/recent happenings it seems pertaining to the possible/eventual(?) restoration of the Friedkin Bf-109E (WkNr.3523), though it has been mentioned a number of times that the engine for it has been at Mike Nixon’s Vintage V-12’s. There is a Buchon under restoration to fly at Pacific Fighters, which will look like a Bf-109G-10 when completed (G-10 tail, canopy, nose shape, etc.), but will be powered by an Allison engine. The Planes of Fame Air Musuem at Chino also has their Buchon sort of as a back-burner project, slowly being returned to flying condition. Is there also not a Bf-109 project in New Zealand?

I find it interesting that the type (BF-109) made its fist flight powered by a British Rolls Royce Kestrel and its last(!) flight(s) powered by a British Rolls Royce Merlin.

Just a thought….

Ken

I used to be on a Bf109 group on Facebook, the vast majority of whom would go all kinds of mental if you even suggested that a Buchon was simply a ‘109 with a different engine. They kinda shut up once you mentioned the Kestrel, though!

What happened to the Vormezeele one in Belgium?

Work is still being done as far as I know, but without pictures. I did stumble across a paper with photos showing the manufacturing of new engine mounts for it not long ago. Can’t find that paper now. I believe Jerry Yagan’s rework of a Flugwerk long nose to a D-9 is on hold temporarily, and the Collings Foundation has another Flugwerk long nose for a D-9 project. For now I think the only active Dora is the one at Vormezeele, plus another Flugwerk that somebody is attempting to hang another Allison on.

There is also the static example from Hangar 10 and the Lake Schwerin example in Germany that is coming together nicely.

Good news, I’m not a fan of the Hispano Aviación HA-1112 it’s like something walt Disney would design.

While I’m not a huge fan of the Buchons looks, I am incredibly glad for their existence. They have filled in for genuine 109s admirably, and films such as The Battle of Britain and Memphis Belle wouldn’t have been possible without them.

I was just about to post this myself.

Great news.

That makes it, what, 5 currently flyable ‘109s/Buchons in the world now?

D-FOON
D-FWME
G-AWHE
G-AWHK
N342FH

Two more (at least) on the way from MeierMotors, plus the two owned by EADS being overhauled, and the Biggin-based ‘109E.
