Co Durham (County Durham) has existed as long as I have and much longer I’m sure. Darlington is part of Co Durham and Co Durham also includes Durham City.

Middlesbrough is classed as Teesside (spelt with two ‘s’) or in some cases still Cleveland. Middlesbrough is not part of Co Durham.
