A few years ago I tried to find news of the above, whom I and Jim Coleman knew when we were in 115 Peterborough Squadron ATC in the 1950s. “Stevie” was the RAF liaison officer and was a Lincoln pilot with 7 Squadron at Upwood. Both Jim and I had very happy memories of him, and we both enjoyed flights in Lincolns thanks to him, but in spite of multiple attempts to find him we were unsuccessful. However, my pleas around the Internet for information left their trace, and a few days ago I received an email from his daughter. She had found my messages, but sadly Stevie died just a few weeks ago on 25 June 2015, aged 89. I salute a great man to whom a generation of ATC cadets of the 1950s have a considerable debt. RIP

But the memories linger on Jim.

All the years and different avenues Laurence and I have tried, over many years to find this “Father figure” man, as he was to me, then to be cheated of meeting him again by just a matter of weeks. At times, life sucks, this was one of those times. (Thanks to you Laurence for all the time and effort you put into trying to find him.)
R.I.P. Stevie….They don’t make them like you any more.

Thanks Tony. Yes, we were just too late to meet Stevie again after 60 years! But the memories are just as bright. It is so good to know that we are finally in touch with his family.

Jim has told me his story, a true gent in the best sense of the words, I am so sorry you and Jim missed being able to say goodbye to someone who had such a profound effect on your formative years. RIP And blue skies…

Further to my post above, here is a portrait of Flt Lt Stephens by Pat Rooney. The aircraft in the background look more like Hastings.
He was on Lincolns at Upwood in 1956. Most of the Rooney cartoons I have seen show the correct aircraft, although they tend to be rather fanciful.
