Sad Passing of another Spitfire Pilot

I’m sad to report the passing of Flt Lt Vernon Lancaster DFC RAAF

Vern, was posted to 611 Squadron in January 1943 where he was active with the squadron, claiming a kill on the day of the 1000th kill for 611 squadron, he is credited with 998.
he then joined 453 RAAF Squadron where he flew on June 6th 1944 as fighter cover for Omaha beach.

He died peacefully just short of his 97th birthday in Northern Victoria.
I never met this great man but through many years of correspondence with his son in law, I felt very close to him.
