Hi,
Last year I picked up this nice little frame, does anyone recognise it? or does anyone know anything about when and who excavated this aircraft?
Details as follows taken from the label:
BMW 801 cowling badge from Dornier DO217/E4. Wk Nr5573 2/KG40 this aircraft bombed the Hoffman ball bearing works at Chelmsford Essex on the 14.4.43 at 23.30 hrs. shot down near Colchester Essex by Flt.Lt. J.G. Benson DFC 157 Sqdn. flying DH Mosquito NF2 DZ243 found on 3.10.76.
If anyone has seen this item before (maybe an ex museum exhibit or private collection) also if anyone recalls the dig and or history on the raid and aircraft etc.
Thanks again
Dan

I spy with my little eye the very badge!!! Spot on thank you. Couldn’t wish for a more positive ID.

Now that’s a pretty positive id, Dave! Such a pity the museum has gone.

The only photo I have of our display cabinet at Bletchley Park. Not that good a photo. Its the shine disc on the right in the middle.

Lovely thanks chaps, is there nothing aviation related at Bletchley Park now? Does anyone have any photo of the old display?

It does look like one of Eddie’s. He liked to collect flat bits he could mount into folders. I believe Tiger Collectables have got some of his collection. The Dornier details are in ‘Blitz Then and Now’ vol 3:

We had one of these at our old museum at Bletchley Park some years ago. It belonged to the late Eddie Renyolds who got it from a crash site he dug. After we closed the museum Eddie sold it to a dealer. But I don’t remember who he was.

As a point of interest, I understand there are two of these badges per engine, one on the cowling and one of the engine, can any confirm if this is correct?
