Can anyone advise what type of aircraft this would have been fitted to. Was it a general item fitted to many or specific to certain types only bombers. I have in mind Halifax? and possible Lancasters ?

As you say, general purpose. These appear in immediate post-war types (Lincoln and Brigand are two random examples). The Lancaster ones were like a little square block with a tiny crank handle
