A German H&B Induktor…..so, what is it for?
When I removed the top-cover there are two (fairly hefty) terminals.
The spindle is designed to take a ‘pull-cord’ so that it can be spun (briefly) like starting a lawn-mower. The spindle also has a square drive (about 8mm) so that it can be turned continuously; when I turned the spindle with a cordless drill it produced 38 volts AC across the terminals!
I was told this was Luftwaffe, it doesn’t have to be, but does anybody recognise it?

It is designed to produce (AC) electrical voltage from rotational movement; it is obviously not a dynamo (alternator) but I hadn’t thought of an engine tachometer.
It is fairly big; it would just fit within a five inch (125mm) box. Also, in the photograph, it is sitting on two mounting ‘feet’; that made me think it was intended to be mounted on the airframe rather than the engine (but that is just guesswork on my part). It is heavy too; over a kilogram.
For some reason I thought it may be to do with radio equipment but I couldn’t say why?
Could it be from a very small APU (with a pull-cord start)?

It looks very much like a cable-driven tacho generator to me. The output would be about right for that too.
Just a guess though.
