Close ! UK 2015 airshow season almost had a terrible start.

Footage has appeared of a startling incident at Abingdon last Sunday, during the display of the Gnat duo.

Flying in very challenging weather of blustery squalls, whilst turning onto the B axis ( towards crowd ) one aircraft experiences a rapid and distinct wing drop, and immediately descended very close to tree tops before recovering and climbing away .

There was a collective gasp of ‘sh@t’ on the crowd line as the Gnat dropped almost out of sight.

The Gnat Display facebook page is not surprisingly playing it down. He dived down to avoid weather, apparently. Yup.

”Hi there. Yes…the conditions were quite challenging and to avoid weather, one jet went slight lower than normal. Both pilots and jets were fine. Hope you enjoyed the display!”

We don’t know what happened or how close to the trees he was but thankfully ended up ok.Surely the question was why did the display take place in such awful conditions.
