Puzzle for the merlin experts!

Looking through my old diaries I found a note on a RR Merlin that was in a scrapyard in Portsmouth(1986)which is no longer their, the scrapyard that is!The note has a serial number from the reduction gear which is Ser 201843and thats all I can tell you other than the exhausts looked like it came from a bomber.Anyone out there who can use that serial number to tell me where it came from?

You might try the Rolls-Royce Heritage Trust. They hold log cards for many of the Merlin engines produced and that will tell you the Mark/Type of engine and therefore, the likely type of aircraft it was fitted to. The cards occasionally contain the serial number of the aircraft to which they were first fitted.

A chap called Peter Kirk usually did the leg work but not sure he does these days, though I know he is still very involved with the RRHT.
