Sywell Aviation Museum gets a Lynx
The aero engine – not the helicopter! The Museum has acquired this lovely 1930 Armstrong Siddeley Lynx aeroengine dating from around 1930. It has been beautifully sectioned to show its workings and is in superb condition – after a good clean by Museum member Mike Goodman (who discovered it) it now turns by hand….
Development of the 7 cylinder engine began in 1920 and some 6000 were produced by 1939. It powered a wide variety of aircraft including the Avro 504 and Tutor, as well as the Airspeed Envoy and Courier. It is an extremely rare find and the Museum hopes to motorize it in due course to show our younger visitors how an aeroengine works!
The Museum is now looking for a wooden Lynx propeller hub to complete the engine for display –

I’ve got a very nice complete propellor for a Lynx engine if you need one.
Thanks Auster – we only need the boss I’m afraid, as its sectioned we want to get it motorized and the stand wont allow for a full sizer but many thanks anyway! ATB TT

The prop just looks like a Rotol Left-hander (Griffon Seafire?, Lanc II?, Hercules Wellington?) – but without its steel root collar fitted.
I have a wooden prop hub and it is embossed with the engine type. It is an Armstrong-Siddeley something, I just can’t remember what, at the moment! Sorry. I’ll try and get a look tomorrow and let you know.

Thanks Anon!
Deffo not Spit etc – its my fault I didn’t put a scale in the picture but I doubt its 3ft long! Looks civilian, 30’s no markings at all on it – was thinking Pobjoy or JAP powered machine its that small but that being the case, why a separate blade and not one piece?
Forum stalwart G-ASEA has kindly agreed to loan us a Lynx hub so provided it fits we’re sorted I think but would still like to see a pic of your hub if its a Lynx one if that’s OK!
Best regards
