Interesting that there is nobody with an RAF background in the RAFM SMT
Good or bad – discuss

No worries, Charlie, it’s probably a lesser known fact than I first thought.

The attached details the MOD’s Quangos, or more correctly Non-Departmental Public Bodies (NDPB). You’ll see that listed is the RAF Museum. The RAF Museum was included in the Coalitions Review of NDPBs. It survived.
My apologies David. However advanced your years you learn something new every day! I had no idea that some of those organisations listed fell into the category.

Raising cash seems to be the main driving force for many museums with high overheads and limited government support. No surprise to see the catering being pushed.Luckily it is only a temporary set up and could be moved out easily to a fresh location.Luckily other aviation museums are available,if you cannot cope.

I wonder how some of the people on here would feel if they took on a new job and were slated before they’d even had a chance to prove if they could do the job. Add to that a few pretty nasty jibes and it’s actually a poor do. Her tenure at the RAFM may not be wise, it also may be inspired but she deserves a fair go at doing the job and to make her mark.
Fair play?

A Quango? When I last looked it was a registered charity!

Does look a big poor but that’s as much to go with the general tackiness of the design as much as the location. I think if the RAFM wants to maximise the income from food then they could think outside the box a little and try something beyond a sausage roll.
Quote funny to think of the RAFs recent efforts in getting more out of their brand and then you see it juxtaposed with a sausage roll!
A NAAFI wagen with “tea and a sticky (bun)” might be a more realistic choice.

I do love the ignorance of some people. The RAF Museum is itself a QUANGO !

Here we go 🙂
I do feel for a lot of you. It is a dreadful world we live in what with the…The youth of today, people with left wing views, museum ‘professionals’ and computer touch screen displays!! Throw in poor old Jeremy Clarkson and it’s just terrible.
This forum has proved itself to be kind and generous In the past and I wonder if you all might have a whip round and purchase that airfield in the countryside where sensible people could go and act like was still 1955 – a time when everything was just as it should be.
🙂

and a party of school kids who seemed totally uninterested in the displays.
Are you talking about visitors or the new management team here?
By: charliehunt - 6th April 2015 at 15:06
That’s a great phrase – extremely apt in any circumstance. What happened to the “bonfire” of these wretched organisations?
By: Resmoroh - 6th April 2015 at 15:00
Regretfully, the first phrase of PanzerJohn’s last sentence says it all. And it is becoming all too common in all walks of life. Depends upon who you vote for! You gets what you votes for! Those who say they are interested in aviation history but not in politics get what has occurred in this instance – a “quango queen” (and there are a lot of ’em!). Do NOT leave the organisation to somebody else while you are being orgasmic over a Mk 17c Floggle-Toggle.
HTH
Resmoroh
And I thank you for the phrase “quango queen” – I will use it myself in the future (with appropriate niceties)!
By: PanzerJohn - 6th April 2015 at 14:40
I have a couple of friends who volunteer there (prob not for much longer), a total lack of any enthusiasm and funding for even small projects is stifling enthusiasm, whilst large amounts are spent on bringing in consultants. A ridiculous and rigidly enforced health and safety policy which treats treats grown men like children, the place has been taken over by museum “professionals”, they don’t care whether it’s an aviation museum or pottery one. The new boss is a left wing political quango queen with no apparent knowledge of aviation, I await developments with a heavy heart.

The last CEO was exRAF and rumours abound as to why he left…….

I can’t imagine a similar situation arising anywhere else in the museum sector, for example major national Art Collections.
Imagine the scene at a senior management meeting:
“Right, any of you lot know anything about art?”
“Er, nope!”

Oh yes you do.

A most excellent plan Moggy, that’ll keep those pesky teenage mums out!
That would be an improvement 🙂 (only kidding, honest)
I know the argument that kids are the future, and should be encouraged to visit museums…blah, blah, blah
When we visited last October, the day was spoilt by having screaming children in virtually every hall, and in the restaurant.
There was a party of ATC cadets who seemed vaguely interested in what they were looking at, and a party of school
kids who seemed totally uninterested in the displays. Something you don’t seem to get at Duxford. Maybe it’s the
catchment area ?
While it’s free though, you will get people treating it as a place where they can let their children run amok, while they sit
and have a cup of tea.
I of course realize that if it were only aviation enthusiasts visiting aircraft museums, visitor numbers would be pretty low.

Its a well preserved old airfield.

I suppose it’s all too late to move the whole caboodle to Bicester, and make a proper Museum, with the ability to drag them out, run them up and heaven forbid fly something?
Oh well, opportunity lost.
Pardon my ignorance but why Bicester?
By: Mike J - 6th April 2015 at 10:57
My plan? Put on an entrance fee of £25 and do away with the money raising concessions. How’s that feel?
