Hello,
Apologies if this subject has been dealt with elsewhere on the forum.
Were any Soviet Recce/Bombers lost through accidents or mechanical problems whilst on ops around the British Isles during the “Cold War” ?
If so were the RAF or RN/FAA involved in any rescue attempts ?
Thanks
Alex

Well hopefully the forum censor won’t object to the use of the word “FORGER”. One of which dropped into the Atlantic off its carrier years ago.

An AN-12 crashed in the North Atlantic in the early 70s. I don’t know if it was east or west of Iceland.
To be exact, that plane was not An-12 “Cub” plane, but An-22 “C o c k”. This disaster took place in July 18, 1970 in Northern Atlantic area.
[The Forum censor does not permit to write the NATO codename of this plane as one word, replacing it with ***]. :apologetic:

I think this incident took place in North Atlantic. Soviet Navy TU16 Badger crashes while making low passes over the USS Essex in late 60’s. Shows what can happened when these things go wrong.

HMS Ark Royal rammed a Soviet Destroyer with the loss of some of Russian crew in the 70’s, but I think that may have been in the Med and also in 70’s a damaged Soviet destroyer limped into Portsmouth, but I don’t believe the Soviets ever lost an aircraft around UK during the Cold War.
