As usual I stumbled across something interesting while looking for something else, but the digital archives of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana have a fascinating group of material from Leonard Haines of 19 Squadron. Some photos, lots of family letters, combat reports, and even his flying logbook, including a very eventful day on September 15, 1940 at the controls of Spitfire X4352.

Does anybody know why a university in Indiana would have these materials?

Hi,
I have just come across this thread and thought I would shed some light on it…
Leonard Haines was my Great-Uncle.
The reason his log book, medal, and other docs are in the uni archives is because that is where my Uncle (also called Leonard) worked.
Grandma gave Leonard all the docs to keep, but despite many requests he would not part with them and at some point deposited them at the uni. Anyway, at least very good scans are available online!
