Calling All Engine Boffs…!
Can any kind soul with data to hand look to see if they recognise these camshaft numbers. They are for either a V12 or (Just maybe..) inline 6-cylinder engine. Merlin or Griffon are suspected types…
1;- 2904/1A 8833D 4 (one-piece cam’.)
2;- 2904/1A 8814A 5 (Ditto.)
3;- 18778/5 B855B AF92 10 (A two-piece camshaft with an attached spur and crown-wheel on one end, strongly suggestive of RR V12.)
All;- QA stamps almost unreadable, but looks like ‘WEO’ of ‘WEC’. Cam-lobe spacing is about 62mm. Both ends splined – looks like No.1 SBAC splines. Whilst probably RR, there is a chance that these are late DH Queen 30/70 series etc (Doubtful.). Any leads whatever most appreciated.

Pete,
I’ve uploaded the images to Photobucket, and I’ve just pasted the addresses above, but they don’t seem to work.
I must be doing it wrong….
You need to copy and paste the “IMG” file, from the picture to here.

From the de Havilland Gipsy Queen Series 30 & 70 Spare Parts List:
2904/1A Camshaft for Gipsy Queen 30
18778 Camshaft for Gipsy Queen 70
Respectively one piece and two piece as described, the latter with a bolted joint half way along.
I fear that Tonk won’t be retiring early on the proceeds of these! At least that’s been my experience with four beautiful new-in-box cylinder heads. Usage of the late Queens in Prentice, Dove and Heron is at vanishing point now.

I just get an error message with the pics, but I’m on an iPhone, so may be that.
Rolls-Royce V12s post Eagle have 24 lobes per cam.
Could be Gipsy or Daimler-Benz maybe. DB has a bevel gear on each can, one facing each way.
Could be numerous types, I’ll see if I can see the pics on the laptop.

Hi Tonk
None of those numbers are Merlin or Griffon part numbers. These engines have a bevel gear at one end, if that helps. how many lobes on each can? What length? Photos?Pete
Hi Pete,
Thanks for your response. Six pairs of lobes, so a straight 6 or a V12 etc. Two cams the same, the other, split cam, is related, as the basic spacings are the same, but the ends are a little different. They are all hollow, so we can presume they are for an aircraft engine…..but what…..
Never posted photos here before, so hope this works….
Tonk.
