It might stretch the point calling it breakneck speed – but even in a C-47, hit anything at cruising speed and you’ll certainly be breaking more than your neck.
It’s just the same as driving a car into a rock wall at 120 mph. Fast for a car but moderate for an aeroplane; the result is the same.
