In view of my first post on this thread which was pulled to bits by the experts it becomes harder to make any comment which is not going to be up to the standards they require. Within the next few months an ex Luftwaffe F4F will fly in to Scampton. Boyle F4F Luftwaffe.

Would that be why something has been registered as ZK848?

Life really is too short for this tittle tattle. Perhaps asking the moderators to adjust the title would work.

Title amended! 🙂 Actually we do not mind modifying titles upon request. It is no bother at all, Apparently you have an axe to grind over the admin of this forum so why not take it up with the webmaster instead of commenting like you did.. hence your comments removed…

No axe to grind, just saying what I saw.

This German-Phantom-to-fly-in-the-UK story ranks right up there with the greatest urban myths of all time.

38+48 has UK serial ZK848 reserved for it!

Kenneth – will you be dining on chapeau or Humble Pie? :p

I saw the serial reservation news yesterday and got excited…even though I’m on the other side of the world! That being said, I’m still waiting on news that their Buccaneer has flown…

Warhawk… The spares ship is here at Scampton, but the flyer is yet to arrive.

Thanks for the info, never knew two airframes were involved

If the moderators could somehow slip the word “Phantom” in the title it would suffice I guess… 😉

The problem with people who look for mistakes in other peoples submissions is that they are attempting to assert their superior knowledge. Boyle that is you. Nearly 8000 posts. What have you done for aviation preservation in this or any other country?? I have not a clue who you are or where you are from so you may be a real star in the saving of artefacts. If so wonderful. if not stop attempting to be superior, because matey you are just letting yourself down. Or as we would say in Dudley Hes a tripehound!!!

I’m sorry, I’ll me defer to you with 250 posts….
I’ve spent a lifetime in aviation, career military officer, two stints at air carriers, flown a warbird solo, GA pilot, aviation journalist, helped restore a one of a kind flier. I do hope my CV meets your approval.

I was just pointing out that it would be nice if people used the correct designations. I can imagine the outcry here if someone calls a Spitfire Mk. 5…or a Seafire Mk. XLVII.
You may not have been around a long time, but aviation and aviation history is rather precise…there is a difference between a Westland Whirlwind of 1940 and one of 1955. Likewise HP Argosys.
Likewise there are both Douglas and Cessna Skyhawks. And it’s Bf-109…and Me-262.

If we use your logic, lets call it “F4″…forgetting in the US Navy designation system of 1922-62 there was a F-4B, F-4C, F-4D, F-4F, F-4U, F-4H…after all, a Corsair is the same thing as a Phantom with wings, engines and the like.

If were’re going to intelligently discuss matters here, lets TRY to get it right shall we?

I first read this as an F4F ie a Wildcat not F-4F a German Phantom. Then I got confused by 38+48. I do wish people wouldn’t be lazy and use the proper terminology.

You might also wish to let Orion know of your issues…..

When I saw F4F, I though you were discussing a Wildcat.
The Phantom is F-4F.
Same as getting the mark numbers of UK types correct….

Well I have had to re allocate a tenner of mine already so not bets this time. However word is that arrival here has slipped to early next year. It is currently being re-rigged ready to come over, to be operated by a German crew.

To get this topic back to life again: 38+48 has UK serial ZK848 reserved for it! Wether this means it will actually fly again is another matter of course….

re;

HHA’s Hunters have the same status as, for example, BAE’s PC-9s – owened and operated by a private company, but on the MIlitary register, so outwith the scope of the Civil Aviation Authority. The MIlitary Aviation Authority has responsibility.

I have never forgotten when the entire hangar shook at Waddington, I dashed out and The German F4 was looping, the noise was incredible! Louder than The Vulcan too…

But Hunters are allowed to fly by the CAA anyway. No one has operated any aircraft yet that is not already cleared by the CAA so would they try and block it or have they no say in the matter?

The CAA licensing of Hunters is regards a Permit to Fly. That means they cannot fly for reward – the HHA aircraft are operated outside of that hence the new military serials issued .
