Could that second numeral be a “7” rather than a “1” – did 7s have a vertical section at the bottom at that time?

Roger Smith.

Here’s a photo of K2227 https://www.flickr.com/photos/42836978@N02/6233384137/in/photostream/

On this website you can find K2196 under RAF College:
Bulldog IIA – K1693, K2166, K2195, K2196, K2212, K2213, K2862, K2948, K2950, K2951

It’s just that the space between what might be a “1” and the “9” seems greater than the space between the “9” and the “6”.

Roger Smith.

K2796 was a Vickers Victoria V.
I’ve found no Bristol Bulldog with a Kx796 ending, these were the K-serials:
1079-1101
1603-1694
2135-2234 K2196
2476-2495
2859-2872
2946-2963
3170-3186
3504-3513
3923-3953
4189
4292
4566-4576 (TM)

and some with J-serials
9480
9567-9590

I’ve just seen this and immediately I though Bulldog at Cranwell with the distinctive hangars behind.

Thanks to Colin C on RAF Commands

The aircraft has to be Bulldog K2196: – delivered Kenley 28 Nov 31, Ftg Area 4 Jun 32, RAFC 5 Jan 34, SOC 20 Nov 35

Also I have just seen Wieeso agrees

“RAFC 5 Jan 34” Is the clue I think

The pilot in the photo would have been “Pilot Officers are Posted to their respective Units on 15.12.34, on appointment to Permanent Commissions” according to Flight so photo taken at RAFC in 1934

Considering the just still recognizable rest of the second figure it’s the Bristol 105 Bulldog IIa K2196

Sabrejet

Thanks

Maybe allow me to identify the aircraft- and would make sense as all the Knn96 Gauntlets “did not fit”
