Finally after years of moving stuff about from store to store, the restoration of the best collection of Boulton Paul artefacts outside the RAF Museum, is underway again. The control columns for Balliol WN534 are fully assembled and working, though we have a stick grip on one and a spade grip on the other. Early production Balliols had spade grips, later ones had stick grips, so this is representative of both. Of course the real reason is that we only have one of each. Can anyone supply a second ? Getting the 60-year old corroded, seized chain in each column working again was a time consuming job undertaken perfectly by 15-year old Harry Stant. Though I did threaten to hit him with a hammer if he broke it.
Demobbed is listing WN534 as now being at the Tettenhall Transport Heritage Centre, which is true of the restored upper part. The un-restored lower part is in store at Penkridge. Unfortunately for Demobbed the restored parts will be fitted to WN516 when it finally arrives at Tettenhall.
