Gentlemen,
Here is a question about un unknown (to me) element situated into both Hunters air intakes.
This part was not present on our Swiss AF Hunters, and seems installed only on RAF/RN ones. Any infos?

…But I just wonder WHY the DMEs were installed inside the air intakes ….. wouldn’t have been easier to fit them on or under the fuselage?….is there a technical reason for this?

MarkG beat me to it. DME aerials, certainly fitted to FGA9s. It was a bit of a squeeze to slide past between the aerial and the fueslage to get down the intake to inspect the compressor blades.

Thanks for helping! 🙂

Can’t say for sure but I think they are aerials for the Rebecca homing system
Correct. DME aerials.

I am 100% sure it is RAF origin since this picture was taken at Duxford Museum, and FGA.9 XG154 in Hendon is similar (see pic).
But I confirm that the T-Bird in FAA Museum Yeovilton does not have them !

Don’t think this was installed on any R.A.F. Hunters.
Certainly none of the “T” birds I worked on at Lossiemouth had such a fitting.

Definitely aerials – not sure which system.

Possibly a support to attach the engine intake cover to,with a screw lock on the front of the cover…
