Hello,
I have been offered a windscreen glass which is described as from a early Mk1 Spitfire, I thought it was at first the front piece of the laminated armoured glass but after inspecting it there are no signs of any lamination etc so could this be a pre armoured windscreen glass panel?.
I have taken a photo of it best I can(how do you take good shots of clear glass?), it is about 5mm thick and apart from a few minor edge chips in a good condition.
I have seen photo’s of the early non armoured windscreen which is on the restored Spitfire Mk1 at Cosford , I cannot find any drawings so is there anyone who can help or anybody of the Medway group who can share some info on the one they put on this aircraft?
Regards
Jason

mmitch,
Thank you for the link, however have been told privately that any questions regarding aircraft that MAPS has worked on owned by the RAFM should be addressed direct to the Museum due to data protection.

Edgar,
Thank you for the information, I had hoped it was from the early spitfire prior to the introduction of the BP glass, but looking at the photo of the spitfire at Cosford its clearly not, does anybody have any information on the type which is fitted to the Cosford one just out of curiosity?

Drawing 30030 sheet 33 (which the RAF Museum has) shows the add-on laminated panel, and has the legend, “When assembling the B.P. panel see that the side with the thick lamination is facing for’d – this is marked on the glass.”
The drawing for the b.p. glass is listed as 30030 sheet 323 (which I don’t have,) and the frame, holding it, is in two halves, numbered as 30030 sheets 367 & 368, with a thin strip of armour 30030 sheet 369 along the bottom. Sorry, but I don’t have those three, either.

Hello Jules,
Thank you and what a fantastic display, there is no plastic residue just some discolouring on the glass which led me to believe its only been a single pane, the seller has let me have it for only £5 so not complaining, if it was part of a laminated glass, which one- internal or external type?
Where did you get all the artwork done for the different aircraft that is displayed with the parts.
Again thank you

Jason
what you have is a single laminate one of several that makes up the full armoured windscreen, from memory, I think there are two thick panes, about 15mm thick and two thinner panes 5 – 6mm thick, all are held together with a ‘plastic’ laminate, it’s this that discolours over time.
here’s a photo of mine, sorry it’s a bit far away !

Hello,
It maybe my photography which makes you feel it is not symmetrical and lack of colour as I placed it on a white board and took the shot from a overhead position, but from the basic measuring I have done it seems equal, can assure you its not new glass and has some dis-colourisation so do not feel its not a repro, if it is its a very poor one.

It doesn’t appear to be symmetrical John. The complete lack of colouration suggests to me this is a repro item.
