Hi there.
I am researching the filming locations from the 1979/1980 BBC TV series “Shoestring”, for a website that I run: http://www.rhevans.co.uk/shoestringfilminglocations.
One episode (called โFind the Ladyโ with Toyah Wilcox) features a DC-3 operated by Eastern Airways.

I believe this is the well known G-AMPO aircraft which has been discussed on this forum and is now residing at the 47th Air Despatch Squadron, Lyneham.
Does anybody out there know which UK airport G-AMPO would have been operating from, around the filming dates of 10th – 26th September 1979?
My only clues are:
According to photographs on the web G-AMPO was in Dusseldorf at the beginning of September 1979.
One of the shots shows nearby hills – which is rare for UK airports
Most Shoestring locations were either in London or south of the M4.
Can anybody help?
Regards,
Gloster

Hi there.

At that time, G-AMPO was operated by an early incarnation of Eastern Airways which operated 3 DC-3s from Kirmington/Humberside Airport (G-AMPO, G-AMRA and G-AMYJ). I am not familiar enough with the appearance of the buildings and airfield at the time to be be sure, but the terrain appears similar to Kirmington, although it could have been flown elsewhere for filming.
All three DC-3s were offered for sale in 1980 and Eastern Airways went on to operate a pair of Shorts 330 (G-NICE and G-EASI) before becoming part of Genair.

[QUOTE=TEEJ;2180716]Is it Weston-Super-Mare Airport? If you have a look in street view at the airport there are surrounding hills.
I agree with Teej – the DC-3 is probably located around the old Bristol Aeroplane works at the southwest corner of the airfield. I think the piece where the car driven by Christopher Biggins’ character, with Shoestring on the bonnet, was taken on the northern perimeter-track/taxiway, with a fleeting glimpse of the multiple pent roof building in the backgound (shown on Google Earth).
There is higher ground to both the north and the south of the airfield.
Further to this, several other shots are also located in the Weston-Super-Mare area, including one with a fleeting glimpse (at 16:59) of Birnbeck Pier.

I don’t think it’s Staverton either. There can’t be many airports with a hill nearby ???
Here’s another view – but not much to see in the background.

Hmmmmmm. I don’t think its Weston. The shot below shows the nearby hills are probably within a mile of the airport.
Thanks for trying though!

G-AMPO is no longer at RAF Lyneham she is now at RAF Brize Norton

Wasn’t Shoestring supposed to be located in Bristol?
(Sorry, just read your website which confirms, obvious really ๐ )
Much of this episode was filmed around Weston Super-Mare, Bristol and London. I don’t think it’s Bristol Airport.
