Alleged Spifire Wreckage Part? Help Please

im chris from North wales UK

was in antique shop and saw some spitfire wreckage for sale. owner didnt know much but did see some provenance of a crash in a pre 1960’s local newpaper and bought the item from person who had it in his possession 50 odd years. i apologies for poor picture, item is in a glass display cabinet in shop. one note of interest in the middle of the twisted metal is a green hessian/patch like material that runs through the middle of the twisted metal. im wondering could this green hessian material give any clue to what part of craft it could be? this is my question 😉 i havnt bought it yet i may do just a curio piece. the spitfire is the most iconic aircraft of the past 100 years. any info would be fantastic

regards

I think you might be missing the point…the decimal point.

Those who make ‘pointless’posts on the Shuttleworth logo thread maybe should be a little circumspect about throwing stones?

24 SWG sheet is between 5 and 6 millimetres thick.

It could be the little known up-armoured Spitfire? A great idea but it came to grief in the hedge at the end of Castle Bromwich airfield on its first take off.

(Sorry, couldn’t resist 😉 )

CD, I think you may have a decimal point or two missing.

Oops! Yes, that should be ‘between point 5 and point 6 millimetres’!

…and what’s 24 swg?

SWG (Standard Wire Gauge) is a rather archaic British system for measuring the thickness of metal sheet (or wire); 24 SWG sheet is between 5 and 6 millimetres thick.

At only £22 it may be worth a ‘punt’…..people pay a lot more, for a lot smaller pieces of Spitfire (if it is).

I think the firewall was asbestos millboard, and the cladding was 24 swg hope that helps in your identification.

Well it doesnt look like anything engine as the label says. Material is too thin, looks more like skinning material.

I assumed the writing that is covered up said cowling, or similar.
The green part looks like stainless steel to me.

Looks to be asbestos firewall sandwich. Near the engine but I wouldn’t go sniffing at it.
