Odd WW2 B17 Wing Marking

I captured this image of a B17 from a WW2 documentary on TV recently. Apologies for the poor quality.

What struck me is the peculiar triangle marking on the Starboard wing. Does anyone know who carried that marking and why?

Thanks in advance!

I note that the 1st Bombardment division’s HQ was at Bassingbourne, so not all that far from where I sit typing this. More reading to be done methinks.

Simon, You may have a little bit of confusion mixing up in your mind.
The first air division’s (formerly called first bombardment division) HQ was at Brampton Grange.
The first bombardment wing’s HQ was Bassingbourn.

The first air division consisted of four bomb wings including the 1st.

Hi Simon,

The 8th Air force in the UK was split up into three Bomb Wings, later called Air Divisions, and what you see is the triangle symbol that denotes the 1st Air Division. The 2nd Air Division were marked with a disc, and the 3rd Air Division by a square. Unfortunately the screenshot you’ve put up isn’t high enough res to show the letter written in the triangle, this would indicate which Group it was from.

These shapes were also repeated on the fins, although in the case of the 2nd Air Division (all Liberator), they often substituted the fin markings with a more colourful system.

Here’s the link to the Wiki page which gives a good run-down of how the system worked.
