71yrs on, a bad week for the 8th,- on the 8th Oct- 30lost,
on the 9th Oct- 28lost,
on the 10th Oct-30lost,
and finally Schweinfurt on the 14th Oct-60 lost,
158 a/c, 1580 aircrew, that,s not counting damaged a/c and wounded aircrew who made it back…the resolve must have been hanging on a thread after the 10th’s mission, then to have listed Schweinfurt, after the 17th Aug count…
Come the evening of the 14th after the tally was in, must be one of the critical moments of the war, thankfully the resolve held, and as they say “the rests history”.
Remembered gratefully, regards,

I think of those dreadful days every time I walk past the glass memorial wall at the AAM Duxford.

The last mission of that terrible week- the big one for the men of the eighth.
I can’t begin to imagine their feeling’s as they left the briefing’s, and climbed into their aircraft…
