Wigsley watch tower under threat

This morning it has been brought to my attention that the remains of the former RAF Wigsley watch tower may be under the threat of demolition.

I will try to gather more details about this situation and a rumoured plan to save it by turning it into accommodation.

Used to be the village postie at Wigsley and Harby. Never tired of taking five minutes to go into the tower and mooch about. If the land conditions were right you could make out the line of the runways. Many of the ancillary buildings still exist and various, (private) properties round and about had them on the premises.

If you follow this weblink you will find some ‘in-service’ pictures of the tower and rather spookily a copy of a previous RAF Wigsley sale notice from this same day in 1957, which was on a Saturday!! 😮

I’ve liked that tower for 25 years, and always imagined living in it! Oh to win the lottery NOW!

At one time I believe the structure was covered by some form of listing status. This issue came up when a local architect used the NAM Archive to do some research on this and similar watch towers as part of a design study for converting the building into accommodation.

A project to ‘watch’ me thinks!

Glad to see that in the link that I posted in #2 to the Nottingham Local website also has a link to a news item about the Indoor Aeroboot in October! 😀

Looks nice enough on a sunny day, but I bet on a dark night it has a pretty spooky atmosphere !

Still, hope they save it. :eagerness:
